Jupiter Serapis

This Egyptian divinity with Greek characteristics, god of the underworld identified as both Osiris and Api, was introduced by Ptolemy I, son of Lago, first sovereign of the new Macedonian dynasty around 300 B.C. In the temple in Alexandria the first statue showed a figure similar to Jupiter, bearded and seated on a throne, with an urn on his head, a symbol of fertility. Serapis was identified with many Greek gods, such as Zeus, in that he was Lord of the Universe, the underworld, of fertility, healing, and of the sun. The cult was introduced in many cities of the Greek and Roman world until the 4th century A.D. when the Serapeum (its temple in Alexandria) was destroyed following a series of edicts by Theodosius I that forbid pagan cults.
