Hercules and the Snake

Hercules was the son of Alcmena by Jupiter, who seduced her by taking on her husband’s semblance during a night of lovemaking that he made last three times as long as actual time. That same night her husband returned and following that Alcmena gave birth to two twins, Iphyicles and Hercules. Tiresias the seer revealed Hercules’ origin to Alcmena and so she took revenge by placing two snakes in the crib of the twins. Hercules however dispatched them and Amphitryon thus discovered which of the two twins was the son of Zeus. Musei Capitolini – Roma
