Genius of Fine Arts

The relief “Genius lumens” is an allegorical scene in which a female figure, busy drawing, is an incarnation of art, where the guardian spirit (or genio) in the form of a boy pouring oil in the lamp is the custodian of art busy bringing inspiration and the light of wisdom. “Genio lumen” in Latin means something along the lines of “From Genius comes Light,” with wisdom symbolized by the owl. The woman is shown tired with a lowered head, lacking inspiration. Thus, this scene represents the moment in which a thought is born and begins seeking the form in which it is to be expressed.
