The circular bezel of the EOS ring, in gilded bronze cast in lost wax and polished by hand, carries a scene in full motion: Pegasus in flight, wings spread, Bellerophon guiding him. The intaglio holds the whole scene — horse, rider and wings emerge with the same lightness as flight itself, precise traces that are enough to bring back everything. The two sections at the base of the ring open and adjust: each finger finds its own fit. EOS was born from the idea of a ring that would sit on the finger without weighing — a bezel that gave presence to the intaglio, and a band that asked for nothing. No size to know, no constraint to observe: the two sections open and adapt to any size and wish to wear, a ring to give and to wear without a second thought. The bezel seems rested, suspended — as though the weight of the gold were not there. The whole form is built around that moment: the intaglio on the finger, light, and in those 2 centimetres the essence of timeless symbols, the pleasure of the jewel and the enchantment of colour. Placing a scene of flight on a circular bezel is a precise choice. The circle closes, delimits — and within that boundary Pegasus gallops through the air, the figure larger than the space that contains it. It is this tension that keeps the intaglio alive: the freedom of a mythic scene within a form, and that form yielding, seeming to expand every time the light shifts angle. Pegasus belongs to the air: the earth is only the point from which he pushes off. On the bezel he carries Bellerophon with him — the rider who knew how to tame him, the only one to have earned the privilege of that mythic ride. Two figures, one direction: up and forward. The scene shifts temperature with each colour. Pearl brings sculptural luminosity — the gallop emerges like an ivory high relief, the flight in full white light. Black brings density and speed: horse and rider stand out sharp, the movement of the intaglio gaining the same force as the bronze that contains it. Pink carries lightness and drive — a flight that lifts, a brush of colour across a figure in motion. Light green carries the sap of open sky: fresh, already at altitude. Pegasus on the finger. Flight is a choice.

Pegasus

Let your spirit fly free.

The myth tells of young Hipponous, son of Glauco king of Corinth, who managed to capture the winged horse Pegasus, born from the blood that sprang from the head of Medusa killed by Perseus. With the help of Athena-Minerva, who gave him a bridle of gold, he was able to subdue him. One day hunting he accidentally killed his brother and took the name of Bellerophon, killer of Bellero. To atone for his guilt he went away and was a guest of the king Proteus and queen Antea who fell in love with him, forcing him to leave. He was sent off with a secret message asking King Iobates to kill Bellerophon but the king decided instead to have him do battle against the Chimera, a monster with a lion’s head in Lycia. He managed to kill it and proud of the success he tried to climb Olympus. Jupiter punished his rashness by having Pegasus stung by a gadfly thus unseating Bellerophon. Pegasus continued to rise in the sky until he turned into a constellation. Representation adapted from the ancient mosaic of the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. By Luigi Pilcher.
