A face — frontal, still, charismatic. Serpents cascading like composed hair, two small wings brushing the crown of the head. Medusa Rondanini. A relief that draws the eye and enchants. Without a single word, in every language on earth. It holds infinity.
The carving is beautiful — the nose, the lips, the gaze set forward with a steadiness in her that crosses time. Close your eyes and find it all again, trace every volume, read every line. This is a cameo you can feel. This ring gives back every detail. The gold-plated bronze bezel, the oval, the base — everything is magnetic. The light of the frame makes her more alive still, and the plexiglass — feather-light, smooth, almost velvety — slides beneath your fingers and lets her fly. It is like wearing only her — the myth and the skin.
On a transparent base Medusa floats, suspended in light — she seems to look at you from a place outside time. On white she surfaces with the precision of a sculpture, the light is full and every line reads clearly. On black she rises from the depths with a magnetic force you feel on your finger. Light blue lifts her into a dimension of sky and breath, pink is the most unexpected note — a softness that settles on her face and transforms it. Black cameo on black is the densest pairing, almost nocturnal — the relief lives only through shadows and the depths of the carving. White on white is absolute candour — Medusa becomes sculpture, becomes light.

Medusa Rondanini
True strength is being yourself
The so-called “Rondanini Medusa”. Marble, Roman copy of a 5th-century BC Greek original by Phidias, which was set on the shield of Athena Parthenos. The Munich Glyptothek’s Medusa Rondanini is possibly a 5th-century BC work, and the oldest-known ”beautiful gorgoneion” sculpture. The design may have been copied from a gilded bronze aegis that once hung in the Acropolis, where it would have been meant to ward off evil and bad luck. A revision of the grotesque, disk-shaped death masks of older gorgoneia, the Medusa Rondanini appears to borrow the idealized likeness of Athena of Velletri, wreathed in decorative snakes and delicate owl wings—Chthonic dread and death mixed with Olympian beauty and cunning. While on display in the Palazzo Rondanini in Rome, it was noticed and first brought to the attention of Northern European art connoisseurs in the 1780s by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who wrote, “I would say something about it if everything one could say about such a work were not a waste of breath.” Located in the Glyptotheum of Munich
